A Spectacular Example of GE Smart Grid Technology

In the shadow of the New Jersey Turnpike and not far from Thomas Edison’s former laboratory, GE is writing a new chapter in creating a “smart transmission grid.” Using breakthrough GE smart grid technology and capital, two major Northeastern US power grids, in New Jersey and New York City, are now talking to each other and dispatching energy more efficiently and reliably.

The successful technology kickoff was celebrated during a dedication ceremony on December 8 at GE Energy Financial Services’ 900-megawatt Linden cogeneration power plant, just up the road from where Thomas Edison designed the first reliable electric light bulb 130 years ago. GE, along with key dignitaries, flipped a switch to symbolize the flow of up to 315 megawatts of electricity – enough for up to 300,000 homes – generated by three massive “variable frequency transformers.”
